Jeffreys Bay is best known for its spectacular surfing spots, including Kitchen Windows, Surfers Point and Supertubes, which is internationally acclaimed as being one of the world’s top ten surf spots and is host to the International Billabong Pro surfing competition. Straight, long, hollow cylinders and sizeable swells guarantee that even the most expert of surfers enjoys a challenging and beautiful ride on some of the world’s most remarkable waves. Despite this acclaim, J’Bay is also the ideal location to tutor potential Billabong champs. Jeffrey’s Bay is situated right near the tip of southern-most Africa, at the gateway of the beautiful Garden Route – the famous route between Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay) and Cape Town. From Jeffreys Bay, this scenic road winds through the beautiful Tsitsikamma forest, Nature’s Valley, and the seaside towns of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. Due to this prime situation, Jeffrey’s Bay provides travellers with an ideal based from which to explore the enchanting east coast of South Africa.

Jeffreys Bay also hosts and enjoys some world-famous events. One such event is the Billabong Pro, www.billabong.com/za/ , where local and international surfers converge in the ultimate challenge, which is the halfway point of the ASP World Tour, to rank the world’s number one male surfing champion. The Shell Festival is another highlight enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. This part of the coast is famous for its exquisite array of shells, and the festival acts as an opportunity to showcase this variety in a responsible way. Apart from a display of these shells, you are guaranteed to see them put to an innovative use; from ornaments to ashtrays, shoes to cutlery. If you are not in Jeffrey’s Bay for the festival, be sure to visit the Shell Museum to experience some of the magnificent diversity gleaned from the South African coastline.

10 Things to do in Jeffreys Bay if you are not a surfer:

1. Explore Some Soul Stuff

Strolling barefoot along the beach, dodging the waves, your eyes are glued to the wet sand, looking for that perfectly intact starfish or sea urchin shell. This is the number one activity in the Zen Guide to Beachcombing. But if you need more serious pampering after a year of deadlines, traffic and load-shedding, take yourself off to Spirals Yoga Studio for a daily stretch and twist. Or try a Monochord Treatment – sound therapy while a bed-sized harp is played below you. That’s not your style? How about a back massage, hydro bath and hot-rock treatment at the Aqua Spa. You will emerge a brand-new person with a mellow holiday smile.

If it’s music that soothes your soul, take a seat at Potter’s Planet, which hosts a variety of musical and theatre productions in English and Afrikaans. Let the likes of Chris Chameleon, Amanda Strydom or Eddie and the Bats entertain you while you enjoy a meal at your lamplit table.

All within a 10km radius from our accommodation.

2. Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Birders can bump up their life-lists with all the coastal birds to be seen, such as terns, gulls, waders and the striking African Black Oystercatcher. Of course the best way to do it is to take a pelagic trip on the ocean. But if you want to hang on to what you ate for breakfast, a more pleasant way to see the local birds and creatures is to stroll along the breakers and dunes. For a chance to spot bigger game, head off to Lombardini Game Farm, situated in the picturesque Seekoei River Valley, just minutes south of Jeffreys Bay. The farm is home to 17 species of antelope, including sable, eland, white rhino and buffalo. The birding is also fantastic with Secretarybirds, Fish-Eagles and many smaller species keeping your eye on the sky. African Dawn Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, 20 minutes north of Jeffreys Bay, boasts the largest aviary in the Eastern Cape, with over 300 bird species. Take a picnic or plan on eating in their restaurant, and you can spend the day schmoozing with Verreaux’s Eagles and Blue Cranes or cheetah, blue duiker and servals. Check them out on your own or ask one of the many volunteers to explain the habits of the wild and wonderful creatures you encounter. To get there, drive up the R102 towards Port Elizabeth, cross the Gamtoos river and follow the signboards from the first turn-off after the bridge.

3. Go Surfing Without water – Sandboarding

Sick of swallowing salt water? Take a break for some family fun on the dunes. Sandboarding takes visitors aged from 6 to 60 on the ride of their lives down three levels of dunes. From granny-glides to heart-stopping rides on the extreme slopes, you can do it all. Eddie of Jeffreys Bay Sandboarding says, “The dunes are forever changing shape, so the ride is always different. Sandboarding is fun in the sun and offers a good workout too.”

7. Do Your Bit to Protect Penguins

If you want to make a difference this holiday, don’t just admire those ‘waiters with flippers’, help to save them by volunteering at the Cape St Francis Penguin Rehabilitation Centre or by making a donation. African Penguins which are injured, sick or mucked up with oil, as well as any other Visitors from faraway places in need of rest and recovery’, are well cared for here. In fact the centre has the best ‘pilchard sushi’ in town. Some of the ‘other visitors’ to the ‘Penguin Hilton’ have included a King Penguin, Cape Gannets and, recently, a sub-antarctic seal pup which was carried over 2 000km off course to wash up in Port Elizabeth. If we don’t want our grandchildren and great-grandchildren to end up seeing only cartoon animals, we all need to step in and help the real ones survive now.

8. Get Wet Without Waves – Other Watersports

You don’t want to jostle with the surfer boys to catch a wave, but you do want a sea experience to remember; so what about kayaking on the river or ocean? Kayaks are stable and easy to row, so pack a picnic and take the whole family exploring. If kayaking doesn’t ‘float your boat’, there are plenty of other options. Kite-surfing and jumping is taught in the lagoons and Arno, owner of Wind & Kite Surfing, describes it as “one of the easiest sports to learn – low energy input but high fun output.” You could even learn to scuba-dive and experience the sea in a whole new way under the waves. Who knows, you might have the breathtaking luck to swim with dolphins in the bay.

9. Eat Seafood (of course)

There’s no need to leave the beach to find food. Die Walskipper Restaurant, perched right there on the dunes, serves some of the best seafood in town. Here, buckets serve as lampshades and you’ll get your wine in tin mugs .Alongside the benches are the hottest wood-burning fireplaces for the coldest 1 weather. You can’t go wrong with whatever you order at Walskipper as it is always the catch-of-the-day, done in the most scrumptious way you can imagine in clay ovens and on open fires. Don’t forget to leave space for the homemade bread with chunky jams or the snoek pate. Walskipper has friendly staff, a great atmosphere in creative, rustic surroundings and absolutely more-ish food. Just make sure you book during the holiday season or you’ll be in for a long wait.

If you want to shake the sand out of your shoes and get a different perspective of the bay, head to the Kabeljous Nature Reserve just north of J-Bay. This 250ha reserve includes dune thickets, valley bushveld, a euphorbia forest, the wetlands around the Kabeljous River estuary and a coastline of 2,5km.That makes it a hiker’s paradise, and it offers three to seven kilometre walks. Bushbuck, blue duiker, bushpig, grysbok, caracal and mongoose are some of the animals you can see if you walk quietly and, of course, the area is rich in birdlife with over 100 species identified.

How to get there: From the R102, just across the bridge on the northern side of the Kabeljous River, look for the gate and signboard. Or walk from the picnic area at the Kabeljous Estuary until you reach the dunes and look for the signboard and a path through the dunes.
